A Personal Reflection on Fasting

A Perplexing Meet:

As my friend and his family arrived at my son's birthday party, I felt shocked by their unusual greeting – mere nods instead of warm reciprocation. After welcoming him, I greeted his wife, who also nodded briefly. Our conversation at their home had been warm and engaging during my invitation visit, so their brief nods left me perplexed.

An Innocent Disclosure:

Their son, sitting nearby, leaned in and whispered, "Uncle, don't worry about it; Mom and Dad have taken a 40-day vow of silence." Astonished, I asked him why. He replied with a hint of surprise, "What kind of friend are you to my parents? Didn't you know they constantly argue?" He continued, "That's why they've taken this vow – to avoid domestic quarrels."

A Timely Word of Advice:

Their son's candid remark earned a stern glance from his parents, while I silently admired his innocence. I pulled the couple aside and urged them to reconsider their vow of silence. Despite their insistence on waiting until Easter, I cautioned, "Don't let resentment build up; it will boil over on Easter day, ruining your celebration. Instead, break this vow and reaffirm your marriage vows of love and kindness, as the Bible teaches: 'Love your neighbour as yourself' (Matthew 22:39). Your spouse is your closest neighbor, deserving compassion and understanding.

Let's embrace this vow of love, kindness, and humanity. For God creates humans, not divisions. True faith encompasses love, humanity, friendship, peace, endurance, forgiveness, repentance, compassion, and tolerance.

Let's vow to love neighbours and live together with humility!

Amen!

Praise be to God, Thanks be to God.
