A Candid Conversation:
A friend asked me why Christians fast during Lent. I replied, "I don't know why others fast, but I'll share why I do." Then I asked my friend to reflect on his greatest human weakness and calculate how often he commits sin due to it. Just as he hesitated to respond, I prevented him from answering and asked, "When you were hospitalized last year, how many times did you sin due to that weakness?" He promptly replied, "My body was too weak to sin." He realized that during his illness, he focused on recovery and contemplated and repented for his past wrongdoings.
The Biblical Perspective on Fasting:
I explained after him, "A healthy body is prone to commit sins, but a weak body doesn't. Instead, it reflects on past sins and repents." Therefore, I choose to weaken my body through fasting to overcome my weaknesses and avoid committing sin. A weak body has minimal capacity for sin. If you also want to overcome your weaknesses, try fasting and attain purity.
As the Bible says, "If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It's better to enter life with one eye than to be thrown into hell with two eyes." (Matthew 18:9)
Fasting to Overcome Human Weakness:
Consider this: a blind person doesn't see evil, a lame person doesn't kick, a mute person doesn't speak hatred, a deaf person isn't provoked. It's better to enter heaven with limitations than to be thrown into hell with all faculties intact. Therefore, I do fast to make my body "blind, lame, mute, deaf" to avoid committing sin while my body still sees, walks, speaks and remains in peace and truth.
Conclusion: Fasting for Spiritual Growth
Fasting is to overcome human weakness. Therefore, it is fasting of human weakness more than fasting of food. Fasting of food is to express to God the willingness to overcome human weaknesses to get away from committing sins.
Prayer
May all officials, leaders, and people see no evil, kick no one, throw no stones, speak no hatred, and hear no provocations. Fast for peace, in accordance with your physical health conditions, and seek guidance from medical professionals if needed. Amen Glory be to God.
