Unification and Integration of Jesus’ Twin Commandments

Published: 02/06/2020

Jesus’ Unified Twin Commandments:

Jesus' first and second commandments are exactly the same and deeply associated with each other. Therefore, it is meaningless to obey one and disobey the other. Jesus has unified His twin commandments in a seamless way, making them complementary to each other. This compels us to treat Jesus' twin commandments with equal importance by obeying them simultaneously. In other words, if we disobey the first, we disobey the second, and vice versa.

Loving God Make Humanity Humble:

I have mentioned in my previous articles that when we disobey Jesus' first command, we simultaneously disobey the first three of the Ten Commandments, presented by Moses. Whenever we fail to love our God wholeheartedly, with all our intelligence, knowledge, and mind, we fail to adore Him and keep His day holy. Thus, our adoration remains superficial, and we take His name unnecessarily, as we consider ourselves superior to God due to our knowledge and intelligence. Under such circumstances, we neither love God nor our neighbours. We must remember that by loving God, we become humble enough to love our neighbours. Otherwise, we neither love God nor our neighbours, as written in scripture:

Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided. (Proverbs 16:6, NIV)

Overcoming weakness to Love Neighbours:

The stubbornness, dogmatism, and weaknesses such as selfishness, pride, anger, pretence, greed, hypocrisy, lust, adultery, and so on, gradually diminish as people develop reverence, devotion, and faith in God. Consequently, humanity moves closer to loving their neighbours.

Consequences of Dishonouring Jesus’ Commandants:

On the other hand, when humanity disobeys Jesus' second command, they dishonour the first as well. Dogmatism erodes humility in humanity. Under such an influence, people value themselves more than anything else. As a result, they diminish the value of everything, including humanity and God. It must be remembered that love for our neighbours is the measure of our reverence, devotion, and faith in God. On Judgment Day, we shall be measured through this standard alone, as warned in scripture:

The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ (Matthew 25:40 and 45, NIV)

Jesus’ Twin Commandments: Unified and Integrated Beautifully

When we fail to love our neighbour, we fail to love God. On the other hand, when we fail to love God, we fail to love our neighbour. As a result, we fail to understand the scripture, which teaches us:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39, NIV)

Jesus’ first and second commandments are beautifully unified and integrated, enabling humanity to obey them simultaneously, as recorded in scripture:

Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided. (Proverbs 16:6, NIV)
