Commendable Commandments: Jesus' Two and God's Ten

Jesus' two commandments and God's Ten Commandments, as revealed through Moses, have a profound similarity. To appreciate this connection, we must first understand the essence of Jesus' two commandments, which led Him to present the Ten Commandments in a distinct manner, as recorded in Scripture:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40, NIV)

God: The Divine Father of Humanity

Jesus, in His first command (Matthew 22:37-40, NIV), addresses the entire human race, emphasizing that the entire human race are children of one and only one God. In fact, God, the creator of humanity and the Father of all created and generations to come, adopts the entire human race as His children. Therefore, it is vital for the entire humanity to love God unconditionally, as He loves them, having created them in His own image and likeness, as recorded in Scripture:

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:26-27, NIV)

We are Equal in God's Eyes:

Every individual is God's child, reflecting His image and likeness, affirming God as our divine Father and humanity as His children. Therefore, the entire human race is the result of His creation, and we are all His children. Thus, the human race, irrespective of demographics, are brothers and sisters. Our biological parents, being children of God, are our brothers and sisters first, and then our biological parents – a manifestation of God's invisible presence in human form.

That is why the third commandment of the Ten Commandments commands us to honor our parents, as stated in Scripture:

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12, NIV)

The Human Family: God's Rich Tapestry

Jesus' first commandment instructs humanity to love God, the creator and divine Father, who manifests His presence through our biological parents, as recorded in Scripture:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] This is the first and greatest commandment….” (Matthew 22:37-38, NIV)

By loving God, we demonstrate our love, loyalty, and reverence for Him, as reminded in Scripture:

Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided. (Proverb 16:6, NIV)

God's magnificent creation reminds us that our differences are not a source of division, but rather a celebration of the rich tapestry that is humanity.
