Freedom to Choose from God's or Evil Kingdom:
Jesus chose His disciples to establish and spread God's kingdom, saying, "Come, follow me." (Mark 1:17, NIV) The fishermen, abandoning their pride, hypocrisy, and pretense – the kingdom of sin in their hearts – followed Jesus on the path of truth. As they walked with Him, they enriched their own lives and others' lives with God's kingdom.
However, the allure of gold, frankincense, and myrrh in this world led many of Jesus' disciples to abandon Him, forsake the path of truth, and turn away from God's kingdom.
Therefore, Jesus then asked the Twelve, "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Simon Peter replied, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." (John 6:67-68, NIV)
Are We Deceiving Ourselves?
Despite witnessing Jesus' miracles and teachings, Judas Iscariot couldn't shake off his inner vices – pride, hypocrisy, and pretense. He failed to expel Satan from his heart and, consumed by the lure of wealth, betrayed Jesus for a mere 30 silver coins. This tragic fall was forewarned in scripture:
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24, NIV)
Therefore, to bring God's kingdom into our lives and spread it to others, consistent and continual self-sacrifice is essential. Without it, we will merely proclaim Jesus as our king with empty words, while secretly betraying Him like Judas Iscariot for the allure of gold (pride), frankincense (hypocrisy), and myrrh (pretense).
