Before praying as Jesus taught, we must reflect:
Did our actions hallow God's name? Did our words, listening, and seeing honor Him? If not, we must take a holy route, seeking forgiveness through true repentance and confession, to bear holy fruit in all aspects of our lives.
Are We Misusing God's Name?
As we explore the importance of praying Jesus' taught prayer instead of merely reciting it, let's consider the need to hallow God's name with our entire being. If we try to hallow God's name through mere recitation while our body parts are immersed in weakness, we offend Him with our sins instead of honoring Him.
Scripture warns against misusing His name:
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. (Exodus 20:7, NIV)
Prayer: A Result of Harmony Among Body and Soul
To prepare our souls to magnify and glorify God with readiness, it is essential to prepare each body part to obey His commandments. By doing so, our soul and body will be in harmony with the same rhythm of readiness to hallow His name while living on this earth. As a result, we will be able to obey Jesus' two greatest commandments, which summarize God's Ten Commandments: ’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31, NIV)
Prayer: Equally Loving God and Neighbors
As prayer is result of harmony between body and soul, there exists only one way to hallow God's name: by obeying Jesus' two greatest commandments. If we claim to love God but fail to love His creation, our neighbors, then we attempt to hallow His name merely by reciting, which is a sin and a transgression against God.
Let us recall how the one who tried to express his love to God through a surrendering gift at the altar was returned to love his neighbor:
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. (Matthew 5: 23-24, NIV)
